7th Annual All Roads Lead to Chaco Canyon: Navigating Streams of the Digital Economy

For almost a decade, the All Roads Lead to Chaco Canyon Conference served as a cornerstone for educating indigenous nations, leaders, and people on the fundamentals of economic development, including international trade and relations. As the title indicates, Chaco Canyon was one of the major trade hubs in the western hemisphere, linking together hundreds of indigenous nations in what is now North America, Mexico, and Central America. It’s a reminder that our ancestors were astute business people who understood the value of international trade and relations in building and sustaining the global indigenous economy. However, European contact disrupted the once-vibrant indigenous economy and led to an economic cataclysm for indigenous nations.

This Conference teaches the history of indigenous economics, the legal devices used to suppress indigenous entrepreneurship, and more importantly, methods that Native Nations can use to foster the entrepreneurial spirit that has laid dormant in indigenous peoples for centuries, create business-friendly environments, and revitalize international trade and relations among Native Nations.

This year’s theme, “Navigating Streams of the Digital Economy,” centers around the economic development opportunities in the digital era, where e-commerce, artificial intelligence, social media marketing, online marketplaces, cryptocurrency, and electronic transactions are the foundation of business today. Participants will learn how they can maneuver within the current legal framework and leverage technological advances to achieve economic success, all while honoring culture, customs, and traditions. Historically, all roads led to Chaco Canyon. This year, the streams and waterways lead to the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.
